Free pattern: Knitted Swagger Coat and Hat, c. 1930s

It’s time for another free vintage knitting pattern – and this time we step into the mid 1930s when Swagger Coats were all the rage.

This darling 1930s knitting pattern comes from Knitting and Crocheting with Clover Leaf and Dawn Wool, published by the American Thread Company. The designer was Cecilia Vanek – unfortunately I can’t find any history on her, but she was a frequent designer for American Thread Co.

Back to the pattern, the coat is knitted while the matching hat is crocheted – I hope you like it!

  • Size: to fit 34-36″ bust
  • Yarn: fingering weight held double for the jacket, single for the hat
  • Needles: 4mm (UK 8, USA 6) and 2.75mm hook (UK 1, USA 1)
