Fair Isle (stranded knitting) was very popular with knitters during WWII, allowing them to use up odds and ends instead of buying all new yarn.
This gorgeous 1940s jumper is fitted, with puff sleeves and an interesting fair-isle yoke pattern. The suggested colourway was violet, with mauve, jade and parma (yellow?) accents. The pattern comes from Beauty in Hand Knitwear by Lincoln, No. 674.
